MCPF supports heavier penalty for drink driving

SIBU: The Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) fully supports the Road Transport Act to be amended in Parliament.

MCPF senior vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said in a media statement yesterday that it is timely to review and amend the act.

“The existing punishment and penalties under the act is ineffective as there are drivers who still continue to drive after consuming alcoholic beverages.

“Driving under influence is an issue that needs serious attention. Therefore, amendment to the relevant act should also includes drugs, medication or any other substances that may affect driving,” he added.

Lee pointed out that MCPF agrees with heavier punishment for fatal accident cases involving drink driving.

“Serious attention should be given to this matter not only in relation to the provision of driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs resulting in injury or death which is Section 44 (Act 333), but also being in charge of motor vehicles when under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs in accordance with Section 45 of the same act even though the individual is not involved in any accident.”

Lee said the police would have to intensify efforts to detect drunk drivers and would-be drivers need to be given education and awareness before getting driving license.

“The MCPF does not prohibit individuals from consuming alcohol but strongly opposes drink driving. Engage others to drive if you have consumed alcoholic beverages.

“Any amendment to the Act should also make provision to protect the families of the victims who have recourse to action against the offenders to seek justice,” Lee explained.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had pointed out that there is a need to amend the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) so that heavier penalties can be meted out to those driving under influence.
