Training via video call fills void during MCO

- Ting Tieng Hee

KUCHING: After coaching for 21 years Ling Ung Hee took up a new challenge when the normal training programme for wushu athletes became affected by the Movement Control Order (MCO) since March and the current Conditional MCO.

The Sarawak State Sports Council elite coach and Wushu Federation of Sarawak vice president took the initiative to use Information Technology (IT) to conduct her classes through video call.

“I have more than 30 students who are participating in daily training sessions via video call. Those with WiFi at home are instructed to execute their routines and I will correct their moves right on spot.

“They are also asked to record video recordings of the routines and home exercises to forward to me,” she told The Borneo Post yesterday.

According to Ling, who is also president of Kelab Wushu Bandar Kuching, response to her new programme has been very good.

“Although my students do not see me in person, we can communicate well through video call. They were delighted to see me through video call as they must be feeling bored after having being told to stay at home following the implementation of the MCO by the State government on Mar 18.

“The parents are also relieved because their children will only listen to me and become more disciplined at home,” added Ling.

This is because Ling is known to be a strict teacher and coach held in respect by her students.

She has also posted and shared video recordings of the students on Facebook, attracting feedback from coaches, students, parents and friends alike.

Ling noted that training under the new norm was in fact effective because her students could be more focused.

Nevertheless, she is also hoping that the Covid-19 pandemic would be over soon so that she can return to teach her students in the schools as well as the WFS training centre at Tabuan Laru.
