MMEA detains nine divers found to have violated CMCO

MIRI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcemen­t Agency ( MMEA) detained nine divers for defying the Conditiona­l Movement Control Order (CMCO) on Sunday (May 31).

MMEA Miri Zone director Capt Md Fauzi Othman said the arrests were made around 2pm near the Siwa platform located 12.7 nautical miles off Miri.

Md Fauzi said MMEA personnel were patrolling the area when they spo ed the suspects on a boat.

“During the inspection, the suspects failed to provide a le er to allow them to go out to sea for the leisure diving activity.

were taken to the police station to be compounded under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342) for violating the directives of the CMCO,” he said in a press statement.

Md Fauzi reminded the maritime community, especially boat operators engaged in recreation­al activities such as fishing and diving, to comply with the directives of the ongoing CMCO.

“This compliance is still in force throughout the CMCO period and all tourism and recreation­al activities must obtain wri en approval from the relevant department­s. Stern warning and action will be taken against individual­s who defy the directives,” he said.

Md Fauzi also called for cooperatio­n from the community in providing informatio­n to help MMEA combat crimes at sea.
