when the doctor told me that I would be discharged and will be quarantined at KBS. I thought I would be seeing my family soon, but I was wrong.

“Having spent the next 52 days at the quarantine centre was another big ordeal. Fighting the virus was a big challenge, I was also mentally, emotionally and spiritually exhausted,” he said.

It was a moment of joy for Othman when his final test returned negative and was discharged from the quarantine centre on May 28.

He felt he was reborn, healthier and spiritually stronger, eager to be back on his feet again to spend more time with his family in Petra Jaya and gardening.

In this regard, he expressed his gratitude to the doctors, nurses, medical workers and security at the Isolation Ward in SGH, KBS and the Public Health College for their amazing bravery and dedication to ensure the wellbeing of those entrusted to their care.

“Their dedication and bravery fill me with admiration and deep gratitude. Every second they are working is greatly appreciated. To my new friends who are still at the quarantine centre, you will get through this – stay strong and keep fighting,” he said.

Asked if he was not afraid to be known publicly as a Covid19 survivor, Othman said he wanted the public to know that there were patients who recovered and survived Covid19 and he wanted to share his experience with them.

“Seriously I don’t mind at all, nothing to be afraid of. None of us want to get sick, not to mention (contracting) this deadly virus.

“Basically, I want the public to know how we have survived this, how to deal with it mentally and physically, how and why someone can contract the virus even (though) they take precautions and what to do when we are infected.

“( With) all these sharing, we need the public to be more alert – perhaps the survivor’s story could help them to understand more about Covid-19,” he said.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: A man, said to have been smoking a cigarette while filling up petrol, had his leg burned in an incident at a sundry shop in Kampung Empila here yesterday.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they received a report on the incident around noon and following that, a team of firefighters from Kota Samarahan station was rushed to the scene.

“The fire only burned a cushion and a wooden chair (at the shop), which was immediately put out by the villagers before the arrival of the firefighters.

“It is believed that the shop owner was in the midst of filling up a bottle with petrol meant for sale, when the incident occurred,” the spokesman said in a statement yesterday, adding that the firefighters then inspected the premises to ensure that there would be no re- ignition.

“The victim received medical aid from the Emergency Medical Rescue Services ( EMRS) Unit before he was sent to Sarawak Heart Centre,” he said.
