Dr Yii also said a mere ban or even suspension of liquor licence would not address the issue. The solutions should take different approaches without infringing or taking away the rights of others, especially in a plural and multicultural country like Malaysia.

“The issue is complex and real long-term solutions can be found through a combination of proper education, incentives, social messaging, engagement and, of course, heavier punishments.”

Zuraida said that a licence for the sale of alcohol should be cancelled or frozen because the issuance of such licence comes is under the purview of her ministry.

Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa echoed the same call, saying the government should stop issuing new licences to sell liquor until a guideline and legal revision could be done.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) also said yesterday that all new applications for alcohol licence would be frozen with immediate effect.

The call is consistent among the two biggest blocs in Perikatan Nasional (PN) after it was first proposed by PAS. Even Umno Youth chief Dr Asyraf Wajdi is calling for the suspension of alcohol sales until laws are amended, Dr Yii added.

BINTULU: A Lucky Tower homeowner suffered minor injuries when she attempted to put out a gas stove fire on Monday.

Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Christus Buson said the department received a report around 9pm and dispatched eight firefighters to the scene.

On their arrival, the firefighters found that the fire only involved the kitchen appliances and gas stove. Christus said the 39-yearold homeowner managed to control and extinguish the fire using water and a wet towel, but injured her arm in the process and needed treatment at Bintulu Hospital.

Meanwhile, Christus said it is important for each household to be equipped with a fire extinguisher.

“The reason is to assist them to respond and extinguish small fires quickly and effectively before they spread out of control,” he said.
