- Mohamad Abdullah

MIRI: Hundreds of people queued at the entrance of Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) Miri to process identity cards, passports, trading licences and business permits, as well as to pay bills a er the counters there opened for business at 8am yesterday.

The queue stretched for more than 1km outside the building, with some people queuing up as early as 7am.

Miri City Council (MCC) staff and enforcement personnel were present to handle the situation and separated the queue into several lines outside the building.

MCC provided a canopy and plastic chairs at the entrance, where health and enforcement personnel were stationed.

Hashiela Basri from Kampung Bakam here said she went with her son to apply for his identity card.

Upon arrival at 8am, she saw that the queue was already long, up to the Miri Central police station beside the UTC building.

“I also came with my cousin, who is also with her son. But upon arrival, the queue was long and we had to wait for our turns,” Hashiela said.

According to Hashiela, she is taking the opportunity that her son was not at school due to Covid-19 to apply for his identity card.

“I hope I will not be standing very long here as the sun is rising and it will be hotter at noon,” she added.

A disabled person (OKU), Idris Moton from Kpg Hj Wahed Miri, said that he was in the queue to apply for a new Identity card as his old one was missing.

“So far, I don’t see any OKU lane so I just continue to queue up with other people,” he added.

After being informed of Idris’ situation, a staff of MCC allowed Idris to cut the queue.

Ngau Ajeng from Ulu Baram said he came early to pay his trading licence but found the queue was already long.

“I just have to join the queue or else it will be a waste of time for me to come down to Miri without renewing my trading licence,” he added.

UTC Miri is open from 8am to 4pm daily and closed during public holidays.
