-

JULAU: Welfare of the people is one of the main concern of Gabungan Parti Sarawak-led state government, says Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat.

He said the government considered decent houses complete with basic utilities like electricity and water supplies as the most important aspect.

He said this when officiating at (mankong tiang) the ground-breaking ceremony of a new longhouse, a 12-door Rumah Andrew Dagang at Nanga Meluan in Julau (opposite Brooke Fort) yesterday.

“The state government has allocated special fund to help low-income group to repair their houses or build low-cost units, “he added.

The government also provided loans for the building of longhouses, and for this particular longhouse, Roland said he has set aside part of his rural transformation project (RTP) fund to assist in purchasing building materials.

Rolland also announced a RM60,000-grant for the residents to purchase roofing materials and pay for workmanship.

The longhouse headman,

Andrew Dagang Nunting, said the new longhouse would be able to accommodate the increasing number of families. Their old longhouse, a threedoor affair, is located not far away in the Nansang area.

He thanked the assemblyman for his generosity and caring attitude.

“He gave us RM40,000 for site clearing and levelling work. Today, he gave us again RM60,000 for purchasing roofing material.”

A political secretary to chief minister Brian Fung and local community leaders were among those present at the function.
