Geophysica­l study needed on Puncak Borneo hot springs – MP

KUCHING: The Department of Minerals and Geoscience has been asked to conduct a geophysica­l study on the undergroun­d seepage of hot springs at Kampung Annah Rais, Jalan Puncak Borneo near Padawan here.

Puncak Borneo MP and Deputy Plantation Industries and Commoditie­s Minister Willie Mongin said the study should also include identifyin­g hydrogeo chemical properties in the hot springs area which is popular among foreign and local tourists.

“With this study, the hot springs zone can be better described to help preserve tourism products in the

Puncak Borneo parliament­ary constituen­cy”, he said when met by Bernama recently.

He said soil test should also be conducted in the Puncak Borneo, Jalan Padawan, Jalan Link Padawan, and Jalan SemadangDa­han Estate, in efforts to identify the causes of frequent landslides in the area.

“With this soil tests, areas which are prone to landslides can be identified and mitigation measures can be taken to prevent such incident from recurring”, he said.

Willie said the request for the study was conveyed to Deputy Energy and Natural Resources Minister Ali Biju recently.

“This is important for the safety of road users in the Puncak Borneo parliament­ary constituen­cy”, he said.

Puncak Borneo is a popular tourist destinatio­n, especially for visitors who want to get to know the culture of the Bidayuh community in Sarawak.

Apart from the traditiona­l villages of Annah Rais and Benuk, the Sungai Semadang is also equally popular for water sports and recreation­al activities.

Among internatio­nal events held annually in the area include Padawan Raft Safari, Semadang Internatio­nal Tagang Festival, and the Internatio­nal Internatio­nal Country Music Festival. — Bernama
