Moovby appoints Syed Zainal as non-executive chairman

KUALA LUMPUR: Urban Mobility Asia Sdn Bhd, the developer of the peer-to-peer carsharing platform, Moovby, has appointed Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir as its non-executive chairman, with effect July 7.

In a statement, the company said Syed Zainal’s appointmen­t comes at an exciting time for Moovby as the car-sharing platform looks to further expand within the region.

“We are confident that his knowledge will elevate Moovby in delivering the most optimal solutions for our hosts and renters.

“Seeing the impressive growth of the companies under his previous leadership, his many years of experience are a valuable asset in Moovby’s success within

Malaysia and Southeast Asia,” said Moovby founder and chief executive officer, Nik Muhammad Amin Nik Muhammad Kamal.

Syed Zainal had profession­al experience­s in Perodua Auto Corporatio­n Sdn Bhd, Hicom Holding Bhd, Petroliam Nasional Bhd and Proton Holdings Bhd.

“Moovby disruption of the sharing economy by pioneering P2P car-sharing in Malaysia showcases innovation and readiness to provide solutions.

“I firmly believe in its vision to tackle urban mobility and considerin­g that Nik (Muhammad Amin) is a success story of the local startup ecosystem, I have faith in what Moovby will achieve under their present management team,” said Zainal.

In 2019, Moovby establishe­d its presence in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta, Bandung and Bali with 3,000 cars.

Since then, its operations have grown to reach Depok, Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi, Semarang and Surabaya.

Now with a fleet of 20,000 vehicles, the company has its eyes set on reaching Yogyakarta, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Lombok.
