Johor, Pahang, Terengganu celebrate Maal Hijrah in new normal

KUALA LUMPUR: The Maal Hijrah 2020/1442 event, celebrated in the new normal amid Covid-19 pandemic, continued yesterday in several states with strict adherence to the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) standard operating procedures (SOP).

The celebratio­n, a significan­t event in the Muslim calendar, which began on Wednesday at the national level in Kuala Lumpur, was graced by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong AlSultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandaria­h.

Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak also held the celebratio­n on Wednesday, complying with the SOPs which included maintainin­g physical distancing and attendees wearing face masks.

In Johor Bahru yesterday, the state-level celebratio­n held at the Main Hall of the Iskandar Islamic Centre was attended by Menteri Besar Datuk Ir Hasni Mohammad, who delivered his message on Driving Prosperity through Islam, as a central idea for Islam in Johor and way to uphold Islamic teachings wisely and in an inclusive manner.

At the event, former Johor state mufti Datuk Mohd Tahrir Samsuddin was presented the Johor Tokoh Maal Hijrah award which included RM10,000 in cash, a certificat­e and prizes worth RM2,000.

The Saudara Kita award went to Nur Salina Pei Abdullah while the Maal Hijrah Orang Asli award was presented to Yusri Abdullah and each received

RM2,000 in cash, a certificat­e and prizes worth RM1,000.

Meanwhile in Pahang, the Regent, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin AlMustafa Billah Shah attended the state-level celebratio­n held at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, Perak Jubilee Hall.

The modest celebratio­n themed ‘Ummah Rabbani, Negara Harmoni' saw Tengku Hassanal presenting the Tokoh Maal Hijrah Award to former Pahang PAS Commission­er Mohd Baqi Othman, in appreciati­on of his contributi­on to Islamic education in the state.

Mohd Baqi, 80, the founder of two religious schools in Pahang, at Sungai Gau, Temerloh and Kampung Lanting, Chenor in Maran was Pahang PAS chief for six years from 1993. He was recipient of the Tokoh Ulamak Istiqomah PAS award last year. In Terengganu, Kemaman Supply Base (KSB) board chairman, Hussin Ismail, 65, was presented the state Tokoh Maal Hijrah Award in recognitio­n of his contributi­on towards social welfare activities. He received RM10,000, a sponsored umrah package, clothing set and a certificat­e.

The Tokoh Imam Cemerlang award was presented to Mohamad Ghani, who is imam of Kampung Bukit Kandis mosque in Kuala Nerus while Abdul Rahman Ishak who works at the Kampung Kubang Bujuk Mosque in Manir, received the Bilal Cemerlang award.

Yesterday, Malaysians took to social media to congratula­te Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah once again, this time on being recipient of this year's Tokoh Maal Hijrah award for the national level.
