PSB distributing food baskets to Bumiputera households in Bawang Assan

KUCHING: Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) is distributing food baskets to over 2,500 Bumiputera households in the Bawang Assan constituency until Sept 6 amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
Its president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, who is Bawang Assan assemblyman, said the on-going effort is a follow-up to the party’s earlier initiative in reaching out to five Chinese villages in his constituency.
The PSB outreach team distributed food baskets to four longhouses comprising 70 households in Lubok Pelaie and eight longhouses with 171 households in Passai Besai yesterday, said a statement.
“Apart from distributing food baskets to these constituents, we also engage the locals in dialogues to understand their challenges and difficulties faced during this pandemic,” Wong said.
He said some locals expressed their regret that there was no market for their agricultural produce while many others ended up jobless following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Therefore, they expressed their gratitude to PSB and Wong for reaching out to the rural community and easing their financial burden, the statement pointed out.
“We understand that many people out there especially those from rural areas have been impacted by the pandemic, that they are struggling to make ends meet.
“Some of them find it difficult to sell their agricultural produce and this is an issue which requires a change of policy in order to see improvement,” Wong said.
He said the majority of those residing in rural areas depended very much on agriculture as their source of income.
Given this scenario, he said the agriculture sector in the state had to see a transformation to enable farmers, rural ones in particular, to market their produce.
“We shall make sure that every farmer is able to make a regular income and towards this end, farmers need proper platforms to market their produce,” added Wong.
