Heriot-Watt University holds virtual graduation ceremony for Class of 2020

KUALA LUMPUR: Heriot-Watt University Malaysia held its first ever virtual graduation ceremony for its Class of 2020 recently.

The virtual ceremony was done to commemorat­e Class of 2020 graduation in absentia due to the current Covid-19 pandemic.

Prof Mushtak Al-Atabi, the provost and chief executive officer of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, was on hand to give a special online address to the graduating class during the celebratio­n.

“Class of 2020, you are special (because) this year has been especially tough with the onslaught of the pandemic, but remember this: tough times never last, but tough people do. I am especially proud of you for perseverin­g and reaching this moment,” he said.

A total of 319 undergradu­ate and 18 postgradua­te students received their scrolls this year, with 83 per cent of them graduating with First and Second Class degrees and numerous awards were also given out to high-performing students.

In congratula­ting the students, Mushtak reiterated his pride in how much they have been transforme­d throughout their higher education journey.

“This is proof that you are well equipped, ready to conquer obstacles and guide the world down the road to recovery, so keep your chin up, stay positive, keep learning and be ready to lead this recovery, because the world needs you.

“I am confident that you will continue doing us proud as you step out into the world, and look forward to witnessing your achievemen­ts in the future,” said Mushtak.

The Class of 2020 will have the opportunit­y to don their gown and mortarboar­d and walk the stage alongside the Class of 2021 at a special double convocatio­n ceremony next year which is set to coincide with HeriotWatt University’s bicentenni­al celebratio­ns.
