KUCHING: All kindergartens and nurseries in Kuching will be closed starting today (Oct 30) till Nov 13 following the district’s classification as a Covid19 red zone due a spike in cases, said Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.

The Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister said the decision was made following a consultation with Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah who is also Sarawak Disaster Management Committee ( SDMC) chairman.

“The SDMC chairman (Uggah) will make a detailed announcement at a press conference later,” Fatimah said in a statement yesterday.

Its minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique in the statement reminded all of the ministry’s machinery in red zones in the country to comply with the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the Health Ministry and the National Security Council as well as directives from the state governments.

The Education Ministry had in a statement late Wednesday night announced that all 209 schools and educational institutions in Kuching district are to close from today till Nov 13 due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases and the district’s current status as a red zone.
