Department ready to tackle flooding during monsoon

-

MIRI: Zone 6 Miri Fire and Rescue Department is prepared for any flooding in the division during the monsoon season.

Its chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said as in previous years, manpower and emergency food supply from the Welfare Department (JKM) are ready to help flood victims.

Law stressed that information from villages to the department remains crucial.

“Flooding in Miri is relatively controlled without any major floods so far and only flash floods that lasted no more than two days.

“This means agencies are carrying out their roles better including drainage and food supply with less complaints received,” said Law who stated that the department and other relevant agencies are working closely together.

He disclosed that frequently flooded areas or villages have been identified and locals are better versed on steps to take.

“In Miri division, we are quite organised and there is no panic during floods. Residents are now more able to convey information and identify the type of assistance needed,” he told The Borneo Post after receiving 3,000 face masks, 1,000 pairs rubber gloves, 500 aprons, 50 isolation gowns, 100 face shields and 400 litres sanitising liquid from local volunteers’ groups, #sew4frontliners and Ikram Miri from Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting at Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station here yesterday.

“I would like to thank volunteers who made and donated these items. Miri is very blessed to have such groups of multi-racial volunteers to help during this difficult time,” said Ting who thanked fire fighters and other front liners for helping keep Covid-19 in Miri under control.
