Register with Socso to get protection under PenjanaGig

-

BINTULU: The gig workers here are encouraged to register with the Social Security Organisation (Socso) to benefit from the protection provided under Penjana Economic Recovery Plan (PenjanaGig).

PenjanaGig is a government assistance initiative to ensure the social security and welfare of self-employed persons in the gig economy through matching grants and is open for registration until Dec 31 said Socso Bintulu manager Jimmy Hendrick Kijon .

Since the implementation of the movement control order due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he said there has been an increase in demand for services and employment based on the gig economy.

“Gig employees are those who are involved in carrying out a task or job where they are paid and operated through an online service provider platform as well as digital applications,” he said.

According to him, Socso Bintulu has registered a total of 19 gig workers in the transportation sector (Grabcar) as of Nov this year under the PenjanaGig.

Jimmy said gig workers would be protected under Plan Two of the Socso Self Employment Social Security Scheme with RM232.80 contribution per year.

The amount contributed by the government ranges from RM163.00 to RM232.80 (70 per cent) while the remaining 30 per cent will be contributed by the platform service providers under Plan 2.

Jimmy said the gig economy service provider platform needs to be registered with Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) via gig.perkeso.gov.my or visit www.perkeso.gov.my, call 1-300-22-8000 or send email to perkeso@perkeso.gov.my for information.
