19-year-old sent to Henry Gurney School for sexual assault

KUCHING: The Sessions Court here yesterday ordered a factory worker to be sent to Henry Gurney School in Puncak Borneo for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old female acquaintan­ce in February this year.

Judge Jason Juga also ordered the 19-year-old to serve his sentence at the school until he reached the age of 21 in accordance with Section 293 (1) (d) of the Criminal Procedure Code and Section 76 of the Children Act 2001.

The accused, who was not represente­d, changed his plea to guilty at the previous trial proceeding­s and yesterday was a re-mention of the case to hear the accused social report.

He was charged with two counts under Section 14 (a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

According to the charge sheet, hecommitte­d physical sexual assault on February 24 when he met the victim around Jalan Kampung Santubong at 9pm.

Examinatio­n by a hospital medical officer found that the victim was injured in the hymen and suffered bruises on the breasts.

Earlier, before sentence was passed, the accused from Kampung Tabuan Hilir appealed for a lighter sentence by saying that it was his first offence.

The prosecutio­n was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurfadzlin Mahmad Zulhasnan.
