SIBU: Local golf ace Lee Kah Tung walked off with the gross title of the President Cup at the Sibu Golf Club last weekend. But he had to share the limelight with 11-year-old Reynard Lau.

Reynard fired a 65 to top Group B. It was the third champion trophy in as many months for the youngster.

Last month he also carded a 65 to win the November Monthly Medal after clinching the September medal with a 71.

Sibu Golf Club (SGC) president Joe Wong Ing Huong was impressed with the primary five pupil of SJK Chung Sing.

‘With age on his side, he has everything to play for and also with high expectations,” he said.

Wong was also delighted that the annual President Cup attracted 80 golfers this year.

“Golf has become more popular among Sibu folk, especially among the younger generation,” he observed.

“Many people have taken up healthy sports such as golf as a way to exercise. The travel restrictions imposed to curb the Covid-19 pandemic have also given opportunities for people to exercise more regularly,” he added.

Wong also disclosed that Sibu Golf Course is currently upgrading its driving range to accommodate more golfers, particularly beginners.

“It is high time to upgrade the facilities at our driving range which is usually very crowded on weekends and public holidays,” he said.

The upgrading work which includes a canteen is expected to be completed in a month’s time while the additional 13 car parking bays were already completed last month.

Meanwhile, multiple-time winner Kah Tung was followed by Wong Tung Ann, Ronnie Tang and Hu King Huo in the gross section. Finishing behind Reynard in Group B were Tiong Ho Hock, Dinesh Kumar, Ting King King and Andy Hakim.
