Sarawak Club ‘adopts’ five local charitable organisations

KUCHING: The Sarawak Club has ‘adopted’ five charitable organisations for the 2020-2021 term.

The club members’ donations were handed over to the representatives of Sarawak Hospice Society, Mental Health Association of Sarawak, Pink & Teal EmpowHer, Hope Place Kuching, and Bring It On in separate ceremonies, held on Dec 18 and 29.

Each recipient body received RM10,000.

Sarawak Club president Melvin Wee, honorary treasurer Wilson Tan, entertainment member Karen Shepherd and general manager Robert Brodie presented the donations.

The club’s charity adoption programme was aimed at helping charities run their programmes, and also helping to generate awareness of these organisations among club members and local communities.

In addition, Sarawak Club members also helped ‘grant Christmas wishes’ of beneficiaries from the Mental Health Association of Sarawak, through the club’s ‘Christmas Giving Tree Programme’.

“The club and its members have recognised that the local communities have been adversely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, and we continue to play our role in rendering assistance and aid to the needy folk.

“With the ongoing Movement Control Order (MCO) restrictions in force, Sarawak Club is aware that charitable organisations, in particular, have been facing even more hurdles in reaching out to their beneficiaries.

“The adopted charities have shown that despite all challenges, they continue to deliver the crucial assistance to those who need it the most,” said Sarawak Club in a statement.

During the MCO period, the club in collaboration with Hope Place Kuching, donated 1,830 meals to the medical frontliners.

It also offered the use of club premises for the packing and distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) for use by local medical frontliners.
