- Cindy Lai

MIRI: The Sarawak Sports Corporation Pickleball Club (SSCPC) played its second friendly match this year last Sunday at Cenderawaseh Badminton Hall in Kuching. They faced a team from Miri.

The club started in Dec 2019 after Sukan Sarawak with members comprising Sport Development officers who are actively involved in various programmes to promote the sport.

According to Ahmad Rodzli Hashim who is head of sport development division of SSC, the club is planning to organise tournaments.

“We have been practising regularly and have constantly seen increasing new members from other divisions, hence, the plan,” he said in a statement yesterday.

In the pipeline are pickleball demonstration sessions and workshops to students in schools and tertiary institutions to attract more new players.

“On top of that, the club aims to organise the first state competition within the next couple of years,” he said.

Pickleball was invented in the United States in 1965. It combines badminton, tennis and table-tennis and is played on the badminton court indoor and outdoor.

In Malaysia the sport is currently played in Miri, Kuching, Sibu, Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Seremban.

The Malaysia Pickleball Association (MPA), which is based in Miri, is an affiliate member of Asia Federation of Pickleball (AFP) and the International Federation of Pickleball (IFP).

There are currently 11 Pickleball World Ambassadors in Malaysia who are appointed by IFP to promote the sport to beginners.
