KUCHING: Chilly weather, with temperatures going as low as 22ºC, is expected in most parts of Sarawak, in view of the prevailing northeast monsoon conditions.

According to Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) Sarawak director Ambun Dindang, the temperature in Sarawak is forecast to hover between 22ºC and 32ºC over the next few days up till the weekend.

“During normal days, the (daily) temperature could reach up to 33ºC.

“Temperature drops are possible, but not much – only by 1ºC or 2ºC,” he said when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday.

Data displayed on MetMalaysia website showed that the temperature in Kuching was 23.6ºC at 8am yesterday, then it rose gradually to 28.8ºC at 5pm before dropping again to 24.6ºC at 6pm.

In Sibu yesterday, the recorded temperature at 8am was 22.8ºC and it climbed up to 30.6ºC at 4pm, before going down to 30.1ºC at 6pm.

Bintulu yesterday recorded a dip to 27.8ºC at 5pm, down from 31.5ºC registered at 3pm.

Miri yesterday reported a temperature of 26.6ºC at 2pm, which later increased by 3ºC at 3pm, before dropping again to 26.3ºC at 6pm.

MetMalaysia had forecast isolated thunderstorms with showers over most parts of Sarawak over the coming weeks, which could occur in late evenings and persist through the night over Sarawak’s interiors.

It also forecast rain over Sarawak’s west coastal areas in the morning due to the ‘Borneo Vortex’ – a convergence of air mass with high moisture content forming over Borneo, normally associated with heavy rain.

“This is expected to last until mid-March,” said MetMalaysia.
