Relatives pay last respects to Lorna, two sons prior to cremation

SIBU: It was a sombre mood inside the mortuary at Jalan Bukit Lima here early yesterday, as mourners pay their last respects to Lorna Ting and her two sons, Wallace and Alvin Phang, who were killed in the Triso ferry point tragedy on New Year’s Day.

The funeral service, which commenced at around 7am, was held amidst downpour.

Sibu Chiang Chuan Associatio­n chairman Lim Hong Hui and several other members were also present to ensure that the funeral would go on smoothly.

The mortuary, owned and managed by the associatio­n, had allowed the family to use it for free as Lorna’s husband Phang Wei Beng is one of its members.

By 7.30am, some 50 relatives and friends were allowed to enter the premises, where they lined up to pay their last respects to the late Lorna and her two sons, before the caskets were closed.

At 7.55am, the remains were brought to the Nirvana Memorial Park at Mile 23 of Oya Road near here to be cremated.

Assistant business developmen­t manager of Nirvana Holdings Bhd, Kan Wen Chess, said a simple prayer based on Buddhist rites before the cremation took place at around 9am.

Lorna and her two sons were among nine people who died a er the four-wheel drive vehicle (4WD) that they were in plunged into Batang (River) Lupar a er falling from the Triso ferry point in Sebuyau, last Friday.

The other victims were Lorna’s sister Siti Aishah Abdullah, 36, and her five children – Nor Shuhada (16), Khairunnis­a (14), Mohd Aiman (7), Muhd Mustaqim ( fi ve), and Mohd Ahmad (four months).

Siti Aishah and her five children were laid to rest at Kampung Hulu Muslim Cemetery in Sri Aman late Saturday evening.
