KUALA LUMPUR: Some 352.2kg or 3,795 items of waste that included plastic bottles and caps, drink cans, plastic bags and cigarette butts were collected during the IOI-Active Citizens: Clean Up Challenge 2020 which ran from October to December 2020.

It was held under the Waste Minimisation Campaign 2020 by IOI Properties Group Bhd (IOIPG).

“As 2020 drew to a close, IOIPG organised the Waste Minimisation Campaign 2020 to promote a sustainable lifestyle among the staff and members of the public.

“It was also in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 for sustainable cities and communities; SDG 12 for responsible consumption and production; SDG 13 for climate action; and SDG 14 which refers to life below water,” the company said in a statement.

IOIPG added that the campaign was held in conjunction with environmental awareness dates like World Clean Up Day, International Coastal Clean Up Day, National Environment Day and National Recycling Day.

It said it was aimed at encouraging responsible consumption and production among the staff and public, and was run via virtual platforms in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The campaign started in October with the IOI-Active Citizens: Clean Up Challenge 2020 in collaboration with Reef Check Malaysia, whereby a webinar was held on marine debris and plastic pollution, the importance of protecting coral reefs and the marine ecosystem, as well as effective individual action on a daily basis.

“This was followed by webinars on composting and waste segregation in collaboration with Eats, Shoots and Roots, and Cenviro, respectively in December,” the statement said.

The other activities included an interesting peek at sustainable cooking in partnership with Le Méridien Putrajaya, as well as a social media giveaway on the IOI Sustain Facebook page to reach out to the online community.

“Apart from advocating environmental initiatives, IOIPG is committed to nurturing youths to participate in building a sustainable future and collaborated recently with Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) in the International Youth Development Virtual Conference 2020 which was themed ‘Resilient Youth in a Post-Pandemic World: Digital Transformation & Urban Living’.

“More than 600 youths from 19 universities and seven countries attended the two-day event that covered topics ranging from digital transformation to quality education and opportunities, as well as skills development in the digital era,” the statement said. — Bernama
