Tunku Putra-HELP School gets rare IPC accreditation
KUCHING: Tunku Putra-HELP (TPH) School has just received the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) accreditation, making it the first and only international school in Kuching and the 35th school in the world to receive the distinction.
In a statement, it said whilst over 1,800 schools use the IPC in over 90 countries, only 35 schools were certified, confirming that TPH followed the very rigorous and exact tenets of the curriculum.
The IPC is for children aged five to 11 years, and advocates equipping children with learning skills rather than just imparting information, aimed at helping the children to learn and retain information more effectively.
It added that each stage featured clear and specific learning goals and processes, focusing on themes that help the children relate both to their life at home and to the world at large.
TPH also said the entry stage exposes learners to the concepts and ideas and the next stage encourages research and factfinding.
“This stage is where the children learn specific skills that will enable them to build a culture of curiosity and learning, which will set the tone for how they approach learning for the rest of their lives.”
The exit stage is where the children exhibit their understanding of the topic by sharing what they have learnt with those around them.
The IPC focuses not just on academics but also on building character.
“Children are encouraged to adopt personal goals as they work through projects and activities, ensuring that personal goals such as resilience and adaptability, among others, are integrated into their character and become a fundamental habit.”
‘International Mindedness’ is another key focus of the IPC.
“Living in a world of increasing borders and greater accessibility, the advantage goes to those who are prepared to fully harness this potential by being aware and considerate of the world at large.”
The school said the road for their students being true global citizens meaning embracing of ‘International Mindedness’, where they take ownership of issues that affect the world, recognise other cultures besides their own and identify workable solutions.
“This certification represents the culmination of months of hard work by TPH teachers who have tirelessly crafted IPC lesson plans to fit the syllabus and yet are flexible enough to cover the learning speed and style of all their students.”
In their assessment report, the school said fieldwork education auditors were impressed by TPH’s teachers who had mastered the art of making the IPC come alive in their lessons as well as the students, who were articulate about their learning, accurately explaining connections from concepts and ideas to their everyday lives as well as to the wider world.
“Despite the many challenges because of the pandemic and school closures, TPH leaders, teachers and staff have found a way to adapt to the many changes in a very short period of time and still continue to work at a very high level,” said TPH executive principal Julie Dowling.
She said this international recognition and award was a testament to all the efforts and sacrifices that had been made and the school was proud to share this achievement with fellow Sarawakians.
