Bridegroom doesn’t let flood get in the way of his wedding

-

DUNGUN: A bridegroom had to take a 40-minute boat ride to get to his marriage ceremony when the route from his house in Kampung Rantau Panjang here was flooded yesterday morning.

Muhammad Ali Hafiz Razilah, 32, said the wedding dress for the ceremony had to be folded and placed in a waterproof bag before being worn upon arrival at the house of the bride, Nur Fatihah Hasim, 30, located about 59km from his house.

“The water began to rise yesterday (Wednesday), so my family and I had already discussed about taking a boat to the main road because usually, the route is closed to all vehicles.

“Alhamdulillah, we got help and boarded a boat belonging to the Dungun Municipal Council (MPD). This is a sweet experience to be remembered for a lifetime,” he told Bernama yesterday.

He expressed his gratitude because the marriage plans still went smoothly despite the floods.

Meanwhile, Bukit Besi state assemblyman Roslee Daud requested the government to build a new temporary evacuation centre that can be used permanently for this purpose in the Hulu Dungun area, especially in Kampung Shukor for the convenience of flood victims. He said it was necessary as the two buildings used as evacuation centres in the village were also flooded, forcing more than 100 victims to move to other areas, including staying at the houses of residents living in hilly areas.

According to him, an enclosed building with a capacity to place 300 to 500 people should be built and suitable sites can be identified as there are still many open areas in high places available in the village.

Kampung Shukor was among a number of villages in the interior of Terengganu that was severely affected this time with more than 20 houses submerged in roof-level floods.
