Authorities asked to construct larger culverts at Sg Bedang

-

KUCHING: The authorities concerned have been asked to construct larger culverts at Sungai Bedang to address the flash flood problem at Kampung Simboh, Jalan Mambong-Sarig.

According to Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) Mambong chairman Sanjan Daik, the villagers had complained to him about the issue.

“According to one of the villagers, Bibiana Eng, many houses were affected by the flood, including her house, where flood waters enter their houses a few times in a year and it happens every year.

“She said the affected villagers have been complaining about this flood problem many times for many years to the authorities and the authorities have also come to inspect the situation a few times, but to date no action has been taken,” he claimed.

He said an inspection of the two culverts at Sungai Bedang confirmed the fears and various complaints of villagers.

According to him, the two small culverts placed under the Jalan Mambong-Sarig main road are unable to drain away the huge volume of water during heavy rain.

He claimed the culverts are also blocked by debris such as dried wood and bamboo brought down by flooding, preventing water from flowing through them.

“According to Bibiana, the villagers have to clear the entrance of the culverts once every two or three months to ease the flow of the water.

“I call on the authorities concerned to replace the two small culverts with a big Ushaped culvert and also to widen and clear the lower part of the stream in order to solve the problem of flooding each time it rains,” he said.
