- Peter Boon

SIBU: Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) has placed a permanent roll-on-roll-off (RoRo) bin at the road junction of Pasai Siong Tengah here to curb the rampant illegal dumping of household waste.

Its chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said they had decided to place the bin there a er a site inspection on Tuesday, following several complaints from the public on illegal dumping, which was an eyesore as well as a health concern.

The recently replaced mobile garbage bins for bulk waste had been vandalised, while its replacement had been carted away, he added.

He said despite having a mobile garbage bin being there, rubbish could still be seen strewn all over the place.

“The indiscriminate dumping is the work of a few irresponsible members of the public.

“Discarded electrical appliances such as washing machines and television sets are also indiscriminately dumped by the roadside,” Sempurai said when contacted yesterday.

“On Tuesday, I visited the site of the illegal dumping of household waste at the road junction in Pasai Siong Tengah.

“We have received numerous reports and complaints regarding the indiscriminate dumping at the road junction.

“The zone councillor, Munan John, has mentioned the issue since last year. The council did respond by collecting the waste then and placing mobile bin near the road junction, but it has been stolen and the replacement unit vandalised.

“Then, at the end of December last year, the council again carried out collection. Sadly, several members of the public not only

“I immediately instructed our public health officer to use an excavator (to clear the rubbish) and to place a RoRo bin permanently at the junction,” he added.

He said the cooperation of residents was vital to ensure the cleanliness of the area and to ensure the scavenging contractor could collect the waste properly.
