Police nabs unemployed man for alleged illegal possession of firearm
MIRI: Lawas Police arrested an unemployed man for alleged illegal possession of firearm in a raid at an unnumbered house in Tang Itong village yesterday.
Lawas OCPD DSP Roslan Leman confirmed the arrest of the 36 year-old suspect by a team from Lawas Police criminal investigation department at about 11 am following surveillance of a house under Ops Laras operation
“A man was seen walking out of the house holding an object resembling a firearm after 20 minutes of surveillance,” he said in a statement.
Team members rushed to disarm him and seized the black and grey firearm which was later found to be a Sharp Innova air gun measuring 90 centimetres in length.
Investigation revealed that the suspect with a previous drug-related record had purchased the air gun from a fellow villager for RM 100 and still owes the seller half the amount.
“He had paid RM50 deposit but did not know the origin of the gun,” said Roslan, adding that a follow up raid at 12.30pm failed to net the suspected seller at his house.
Lawas Police is investigating the case under Section 8 ( a) of the Firearms Act 1960 for illegal possession of firearms, an offence which carries a penalty of imprisonment of up to seven years if convicted.
