Sports Toto shares festive cheers with residents of five old folks homes

-

KUCHING: Sports Toto Malaysia Bhd (Sports Toto) is sharing festive cheers with 123 residents of five old folks homes across Sarawak in conjunction with Spring Festival.

The five homes are Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng, Pusat Jagaan Smiling Aged and Splendid Care Centre in Kuching, Pusat Jagaan Sibu Benevolent Society, and Miri Home for the Aged Care Centre.

A Sports Toto statement yesterday said the company’s representatives started making goodwill visits to these homes from Feb 22.

“Each beneficiary will receive cash donation as well as shopping vouchers to purchase daily necessities and grocery items for the inmates,” said the statement.

Sports Toto said RM20,000 had been made available to the five old folks homes.

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, Sports Toto has decided to donate to the old folks homes nationwide instead of handing out angpows and hampers to the senior citizens in public for the Sports Toto Chinese New Year angpow donation campaign this year.

Sports Toto executive director Nerine Tan said: “We regret that we are unable to hold the same Chinese New Year angpow donation campaign for the needy this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.”

She said the campaign had been held for more than 30 years.

“Our targeted beneficiaries are senior citizens who fall under the high risk category.”

Tan added that the company hoped to resume the public giveaway of angpows and hampers to the needy old folks once the pandemic is over.

Since the inception of this charitable campaign in 1988, Sports Toto has contributed over RM22.5 million in cash and kinds to more than 414,000 senior citizens in the country.

The campaign is part of the ‘Helping Hands Programme’, a corporate social responsibility initiative by Sports Toto to share, give and care for the community.

It is the company’s effort to ensure that everyone deserves the festive joy and Sports Toto believes that festive seasons are the best of time for reaching out to the less fortunate.

Other than Chinese New Year donation campaign, the company has also been holding similar campaigns during Hari Raya, Deepavali, Gawai, Harvest Festival and Christmas to help the underprivileged groups.
