Delay in school reopening gets STU backing

-

KUCHING: The Sarawak Teachers’ Union supports the postponement of schools reopening in Covid-19 red zone districts for another two weeks to March 14.

This is a right decision and has taken into account the safety of all parties involved in schooling.

STU president Adam Parkash Abdullah said the State Disaster Management Committee’s (SDMC) decision on Friday not to reopen schools tomorrow (March 1) was wise.

“This is a right decision and has taken into account the safety of all parties involved in schooling.

“This will be a relief to parents, students, and teachers, especially those who are in unsafe areas,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He said STU thanked the Education Department and SDMC for accepting the pleas of teachers and parents in Covid-19 red zones not to reopen schools.

Adam also hoped all parties — parents, teachers, and students — would continue to participate in Teaching and Learning at Home (PdPR) so as not to be left behind.

STU also thanked SDMC for setting up a committee under the state Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research and Education Department to ensure the school session in Sarawak can run safely and smoothly.

“The union will continue to support the efforts made by JPNS (Education Department) and MESTR (ministry) in assisting and caring for the welfare of the teachers in Sarawak,” he added.

SDMC has postponed schools reopening in Kuching, Samarahan, Meradong, Sibu, Kapit, Bintulu, Subis, and Miri districts based on advice from the Health Department.
