Bau District receives RM3 million in federal grant for upgrading works on public facilities

-

KUCHING: Federal Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has allocated RM3 million for improvement and repair works on public facilities in Bau District, near here.

Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin said the allocation, which was channelled to Bau District Council (BDC), should boost the tourism industry there and eventually, the local economy would recover.

This, she pointed out, would help the locals who had lost their jobs and traders who had to close up shop when Covid-19 struck last year.

“The Serikin border-town market is a place that we should upgrade to attract more tourists, which would help boost the local economy and increase their (the locals’) incomes.

“For the food court, they (BDC) has proposed the setting-up of a ‘rumah asap’ where operators could serve barbeque-style (dishes) – this is also one of the economic activities that can help the locals.

“I hope that this could proceed in Bau – we (KPKT) would assist by approving more allocations to assist the council, as well as the folk here,” she said during a press conference held after a ‘meet-and-greet session’ with local community leaders in a restaurant here yesterday.

Earlier, Zuraida paid a visit to SJK Chung Hwa Bau, where she presented RM15,000 to the school’s board of directors chairman Kuan Kim Tian.

It is learnt that the allocation, approved under Yayasan Komuniti Negara (YKN), would be used to construct a new roofed walkway at the Chinese primary school.
