SIBU: The Sarawak government has spent about RM1.8 million for renovating and upgrading works on Sekolah Agama Rakyat in Kampung Datu here.

According to Assistant Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Dr Annuar Rapaee, the project is part of the redevelopment plan for Kampung Datu.

He adds that the primary school is currently being run by Sibu Islamic Welfare Trust Board (Lakis), of which he is the chairman.

“With the completion of the renovation, we expect to welcome our first intake next year,” he said in his remarks made after symbolically receiving the key to the school from a representative ofSibu Municipal Council (SMC) – the project’s implementing agency.

Following the completion of the project, the school now has not only classrooms, teacher’s lounge and administration block, but also a computer room, a library, a surau, a mini-theatre, a canteen and a hall that it shares with Masjid An-Nur.

Dr Annuar, who is also Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing, said the project was also regarded as an expansion of the mosque.

“Masjid An-Nur stands as the centre of Kampung Datu redevelopment plan and therefore, lots of upgrading works, especially on the outside areas, need to be done.”

He also said going forward, the plan was for the school to have 25 pupils, attending Primary 1 up to Primary 6.

On a related matter, Dr Annuar who is Nangka assemblyman expressed the intention of handing over the management of the Sekolah Agama Rakyat to Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS).

“We’re waiting for more feedback from the council before we could carry this out.

“Should the MIS take over the school’s management, we would follow their syllabus.

“The objective is to uplift the syllabus and also the cocurriculum of the school, in line with the government’s aspiration of establishing an Islamic international School in Sibu,” he added.
