FCA president suggests more help for rural areas to cope with pandemic

MIRI: More assistance in the form of face masks, hand sanitiser and disinfectants should be given to rural villages, rural schools and those in the vicinity to help them cope with the Covid-19 pandemic, suggests Federation of Miri Division Chinese Associations (FCA)

When presenting a donation to SJKC Chung Hua Bakam at the FCA office yesterday, FCA president Datuk David Goh said the majority of residents and students in rural schools are those from lower-income families and may face difficulty in obtaining personal protective equipment (PPE) that could protect them against the virus.

“In the past week, FCA distributed face masks and hand sanitiser to 15 Chinese primary schools and kindergartens in Marudi and Sibuti districts.

“We believe that if we can get support from people in the communities, more can be done to help these people,” said Goh.

SJKC Chung Hua Bakam headmistress Wong Ngiik Ming was overwhelmed with gratitude when receiving the donation as FCA was the second non-profit organisation that had shown concern for the well-being of the school, amid the pandemic.

“The number of pupils in our school is not as many as other Chinese primary schools in the division. Most of them are from lower-income families. Therefore, any form of assistance would definitely ease their family’s burden during these trying times,” said Wong.

Also present at the donation handover was FCA’s emergency relief fund chairwoman Ngu Ung Keen, who is also FCA assistant secretary.
