Sole breadwinner granny, 68, and family receive food aid from Hope Place

-

Hope Place Kuching recently delivered food aid to a family living at the Stutong Baru low-cost housing area, whose sole breadwinner is a 68-year-old grandmother.

Its founder Kelvin Wan said Jong Khim Nyuk earns about RM600 a month working as a part-time cleaner whilst supporting her son, who has a learning disability, and five others.

“Jong’s son stays at home and is taken care of by her daughterin-law whose husband is no longer with her.

“Jong’s daughter in-law also has to take care of her own four children, aged 12 years to 16 years, meaning she has her hands full and is unable to find any income,” said Wan.

He said the Covid-19 pandemic has made things more difficult for Jong, whose husband passed away 20 years ago, as she had to fork out more money to purchase devices and internet data for her grandchildren to enable them to keep up with their lessons from home during the closure of schools.

“Jong’s disabled son does receive monthly assistance of RM250 from the Welfare Department, and she is grateful for this.

“Hope Place is helping the family by supplying them with basic food items once every three months,” he added.

For more information on how to help, Hope Place or Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching (PKHK) can be reached on 082505987.

They are open from 8am to 5pm (Monday to Friday) and from 8am to 12pm on Saturday.

“All donations are welcome and receipts will be given upon request. You can donate directly to our Maybank account (511289001160) or go to our Facebook page to get our Sarawak Pay QR code,” said Wan.
