KUCHING: Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department will launch a special operation named ‘Op Rentas’ in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri from May 10 to 16.

The department’s head Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said a total of 780 police officers and personnel from the Sarawak police contingent would be involved in the statewide operation.

“Roadblocks will be held to ensure that those without police travel permits and those who do not fulfill the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee’s SOPs will not leave their respective zones,” said Alexson in a statement yesterday.

The police would also be taking action against those who flout the six main traffic offences; exceeding speed limit, overtaking on double lines, jumping red light, queue-cutting, using handphone while driving as well as all motorcycle-related offences, he added.

Alexson also said ‘Op Rentas’ would include surveillance at accident-prone areas and areas which have high volume of traffic.

“The operation will be extended to places of interests such as bus terminals, shopping complex, Ramadan bazaars and the district’s border especially those along the main roads,” he added.

He called upon the public and road users to comply with the SOPs to break the infection chain of Covid-19 virus during the festive period.

The department, he added, had also dispatched traffic officers to the ground to carry out surveillance and traffic control under the concept of ‘Total Enforcement, Show of Force, Service and Advocate’ to ensure safety among road users.
