Preparations on track for Sibu to host 2021 Suksar
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahmah Hamzah said planning for the Sarawak Games (Suksar), to be held in Sibu later this year, is already in full swing.
“Of course, this is still subject to the situation of Covid-19 and, hopefully, by then things will improve for the better when more people get vaccinated by August, September and everything will be fine,” he added.
He was speaking to reporters after paying a site visit to Azman Hashim Community Sports Centre at SibuJaya yesterday morning.
Among those present were Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture permanent secretary Hii Chang Kee, Sarawak
Sports Corporation CEO Dr Ong Kong Swee, Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Wong Chin Yong and Sibu Division Amateur Athletic Association (SDAAA) president Dr Gregory Hii.
Abdul Karim, who is also the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, said the Azman Hashim Community Sports centre will be one of the venues to be used for Suksar.
“I was informed that construction is ahead of schedule and it should be completed by July. So if by July it can be completed, we will utilize the venue to stage Suksar which is our platform to select athletes for Sukma.”
The multi-purpose sports hall will have a basketball court, one futsal court, one volleyball court and four badminton courts.
The outdoor pavilion can easily accommodate a seating capacity of 450 seats with a VIP seating zone, an eight-lane running track built according to International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) certification, a football field and two pentaque courts.
The minister also reminded all Sarawakians to register for Covid-19 vaccination so that can help reduce the number of Covid-19 infections. He also commented on the AstraZeneca vaccine.
‘Personally, I see it as a good vaccine... Another thing is when the registration for the vaccine was opened up to the public, all 268,000 slots were immediately taken up.
“Public confidence regarding the AsraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine high and I do not see any reason why the state government will reject the vaccine.”
