-

KUCHING: Four men with past criminal records have been remanded until May 13 in connection with a snatch theft against two women at Jalan Pending here on April 26.

Kuching acting police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the suspects were detained separately in the city, with the first arrest coming 48 hours after a report of the incident was made.

“The first suspect was arrested in the BDC area, and this was followed up by the second arrest at a budget hotel at Jalan Canna.

“The remaining two suspects were nabbed at Jalan Simpang Tiga,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said the suspects, aged between 20 and 32, led police to recover the belongings of the two victims, comprising identity cards, bank cards and notebooks.

Two motorcycles and crash helmets used in the incident were also seized, he added.

“Investigations are being carried out from all aspects as we believe the suspects may also be involved in housebreaking and vehicle theft,” said Merbin.

All four suspects were also found to be positive for methamphetamine.

“They all have many past criminal records relating to property crime and drugs,” he said, adding the case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery.

Separately, Merbin said police arrested 17 individuals in 14 operations carried out between May 3 and 11 to combat online gambling.

He said the suspects are aged between 17 and 41 years, and included four Indonesians.

“The police will not hesitate to take action against illegal gambling and I hope the public will assist the authorities by reporting on such activities,” he said.
