Community policing to be activated to detect gatherings

MIRI: The Miri Division Disaster Management Committee (MDDMC) will activate community policing in the effort to detect social gatherings being held against Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Minister in charge Datuk Lee Kim Shin told The Borneo Post yesterday that this is because social gatherings have been one of the main causes of Covid-19 clusters here.

“I have called the Resident’s office and MCC (Miri City Council) secretary to organise our community policing, in the effort to seek public cooperation to report any social gatherings so that action can be taken,” he said.

“To date, there were seven clusters in Miri Division that were caused by social gatherings comprising Bah Sayap Cluster, Rakut Cluster, Seruas Cluster, Gridbid Cluster, Jalan Kapitan Cluster, Abak Bon Cluster, Jalan Limbang Cluster, and the latest one, Jalan Lilin Cluster.

Lee revealed the Health Department has initiated an investigation into the Jalan Lilin Cluster, which was related to a birthday event, to issue summonses for breach of Covid-19 SOPs that led to the cluster.

He said MDDMC strongly warned the public against holding social gatherings as the surging number of Covid-19 cases here is worrying.

“The ban on social gatherings has been clearly spelt out in the SOPs, yet there are still cases from this,” said the Minister of Transport.

He stressed enforcement teams would not hesitate to take action against anyone found to have breached the SOPs.
