State should enforce total lockdown to fight Covid-19 – Voon

-

KUCHING: The state government should have enforced total movement control order (lockdown) to combat the Covid-19 pandemic in Sarawak, says Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) president Voon Lee Shan.

He believed that a lockdown is the most effective way to contain the spread of Covid-19 infection.

He said some countries in the world have shown that only total lockdown is the most effective way to combat Covid-19.

“It seems the state government has failed in its efforts to fight the pandemic in Sarawak, while the federal government has not rendered much help to Sarawak since the outbreak started end of 2019,” he said yesterday.

Voon said there was no reason why the state government did not wish to enforce the MCO despite the state having reserves of RM31 billion and RM2 billion from the state sales tax (SST) paid by Petronas recently.

He said Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government should use part of the reserve to save businesses and lives by subsidising small businesses, hawkers, and helping the poor Sarawakians affected by the CMCO.

“Do it now before more people die of the virus. Saving lives is more important than trying to save the economy. There are people affected by the virus each day,” he said.

Voon went on to say that there was no sign the spread of Covid19 would stop unless there is a total lockdown.

A one month lockdown should be adequate to make things return to normal.

On vaccination, he said the process was rather slow due to inadequate supply of vaccine and fewer people to handle it.

He believed the GPS government’s ineffectiveness in controlling Covid-19 would cause them to be replaced if elections were held now.

He thus urged Sarawakians to vote for PBK to form the next government.
