Covid-19: 405 new cases, 5 deaths in Sarawak

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 405 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, an increase of 81 cases from 324 registered the previous day.

The state also recorded five deaths from Covid-19, said the Sarawak Disaster Management Commi ee (SDMC).

The commi ee in a statement said 267 or 65.92 per cent of the cases were detected in Miri, Sibu, Kuching, Pusa and Bintulu districts, while four of the deaths were in Bintulu and one Mukah.

Miri topped yesterday’s list with 98 new cases, followed by Sibu (54), Kuching (42), Pusa (37), Bintulu (36), Kanowit (24), Kapit (21), Song (17), Sri Aman (11), Pakan (9), Serian (8), Sarikei (8), Subis (7), Saratok (6), Selangau (4), Bau (4), Samarahan (4), Betong (3), Beluru (3), Sebauh (3), Lundu (2), Meradong (2), Tebedu (1) and Belaga (1).

All in all, Sarawak to date has recorded 38,383 Covid-19 cases and a total of 224 deaths, said SDMC.

The 220th death is of a 78-yearold man who was admi ed into Bintulu Hospital a er he was found to be positive for Covid19 on April 22. He was a close contact to a positive case.

SDMC said the man had been coughing and having fever a week earlier before symptoms subsided. However he was admi ed to Bintulu Hospital a er having breathing difficulti­es.

His condition continued to deteriorat­e and he eventually died on May 7. The man had a history of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and chronic obstructiv­e lung disease.

The 221st death is of a 52year-old woman who was admi ed to Mukah Hospital a er complainin­g of lethargy, diarrhoea and stomach ache for two days.

An RTK test conducted on her returned positive for Covid-19 on May 11.

She was then referred to Bintulu Hospital, however her condition continued to deteriorat­e and she died on May 12. Her rT-PCR test result came out on May 13 and it was positive for Covid-19.

SDMC said the woman had a history of diabetes, high blood pressure and final stage of kidney disease.

The 22nd death is of a 65year-old man who was found positive for Covid-19 on April after undergoing RT-PCR test.

He was then admitted into the Bintulu Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC).

The man was coughing, lost his sense of smell, and experience­d loss of appetite for several days prior.

He was then admitted into Bintulu Hospital after he had breathing complicati­ons.

His health continued to deteriorat­e and he died on May 13.

SDMC said the man had a history of diabetes, high blood pressure and dyslipidem­ia, and was related to the Batu 25 Cluster in Bintulu.

The 223rd death is of a 29year-old woman who was admitted into Bintulu Hospital after she was diagnosed with a fever at a private clinic.

Her RT-PCR test showed she was positive for Covid-19 on May 4, as her health continued to deteriorat­e over time.

The woman died on May 13. SDMC said the woman had an obesity-related comorbidit­y.

The 224th death was of a 92year-old man who was found positive for Covid-19 on May 5 before being admitted into the Bintulu PKRC, following close contact with an existing case.

He was then admitted into Bintulu Hospital after his health deteriorat­ed, related to kidney disease.

The man had a history of dyslipidem­ia and high blood pressure apart from chronic kidney disease, and died on May 15.

All in all, a total of 6,382 active cases are being treated in hospitals and PKRC across the state as of yesterday, with 71 of them in the intensive care units (ICUs) and 26 requiring intubation.

Out of that, 965 are in the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), 980 in Sibu Hospital and PKRC, 1,251 in Bintulu Hospital, 1,260 in Miri Hospital, eight in Limbang Hospital, 353 in Sarikei Hospital, 966 in Kapit Hospital and PKRC, 161 in Betong PKRC, 119 in Mukah PKRC, 164 in Serian PKRC, eight in Lawas PKRC, and 147 in Sri Aman Hospital.

On the plus side, 438 cases have recovered and were discharged yesterday – 158 from the Sibu Hospital and PKRC, 94 from Miri Hospital and PKRC, 77 from Bintulu Hospital and PKRC, 39 from SGH and PKRC, 28 from Sarikei Hospital and PKRC, 18 from Sri Aman PKRC, 11 from Kapit Hospital and PKRC, eight from Serian PKRC, two from Betong PKRC, two from Mukah PKRC and one from Limbang Hospital.

The recovery rate in Sarawak to date is at 82.57 per cent or 31,693 cases out of the cumulative total.

Meanwhile, SDMC yesterday also recorded 405 new personunde­r-investigat­ion (PUI) cases, and 268 new person-undersurve­illance (PUS) cases.

A total of 7,028 PUS cases are being quarantine­d in 105 hotels and other accommodat­ions across the state as of yesterday.
