KUCHING: The Sarawak Amateur Boxing Association is hoping to relocate its Sukma training centre to the Petra Jaya Sports Complex by the second half of this year.

Its president Datuk Rahman Lariwoo said they are eyeing the existing gasing (top) centre after it has been renovated and upgraded.

“We have been informed by Sarawak Sports Corporation chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee that they are planning to turn the place into a Combat Sports Centre and submit our application to relocate our training centre there.

“We have sent in our application to SSC last month,” Rahman told The Borneo Post yesterday.

According to him, the association will be sharing the multi-purpose centre with some other combat sports.

“The training for our Sukma boxers is ongoing and only two boxers are away to celebrate their Hari Raya Adilfitri.

“At present, we have boxers in the Sukma long list undergoing training at the training centre in Stapok.

“We will select the final squad of nine boxers by the end of this year,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr Ong confirmed that the gasing centre will be turned into a multi-purpose training centre that will cater to the training of athletes in combat sports such as boxing, karate, silat and muaythai.

“We have planned to utilise this place and turn it into a multi-purpose training centre because the place have been left unutilised for about 15 years.

“The SSC board of directors will meet soon for the approval of the proposal,” he said.
