Vandals set fire to RoRo dumpster at Kenyalang Park

-

KUCHING: Vandals are suspected of having set fire to a Roll-on Rolloff (RoRo) container at Lorong Sim Kheng Hong 5 in Kenyalang Park here recently.

A resident, who was the first to notice the flames, promptly alerted the authorities.

A joint investigation conducted by the enforcement unit of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd had found proof of the fire being an act of vandalism, said Trienekens in a statement yesterday.

Following the incident, Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng reminded all cityfolk that any act of vandalism such as arson would not only affect the immediate locality, but could also endanger the public and cause the council to incur unnecessary losses.

“Civic-mindedness is important and we must work together to ensure that all our public facilities are kept safe and in good order.

“If residents witness any such vandalism in their areas, they should immediately take photo of the act and report it to the authorities,” he said.

The RoRo bins have become frequent targets of vandals in the city.

According to Trienekens, over the past years several these containers, located at a number of housing and commercial areas here, had been set on fire.

Trienekens Group chief executive officer Stephen Chin called for public cooperation to take proper care of the waste bins provided in their areas and to be responsible when disposing of waste into these bins.

“The waste containers are placed at certain locations to help the nearby residents and business owners dispose of their waste.

“Unfortunately, there have been incidents where the bins were set of fire on purpose – this is a big concern for us,” he said.

Chin urged the public to take extra care of the communal wheel bins, or RoRo containers, provided for them.

He stressed that they should avoid throwing into the bins ignitable items such as lighters or cigarette butts that had not been fully put out, as these could cause fire or trigger explosions, especially during hot and dry days and when the bin contained flammable waste.

Members of the public can contact Trienekens on 082-612 300 or MBKS on 082-238 080, to enquire or report any waste management issues in their areas.
