MPI to hold free tax career talk via zoom on July 24
SIBU: Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI) will be hosting a tax career talk via zoom, starting 2pm on July 24.
MPI in a press release yesterday, said Gary Ling, Partner of Ernst & Young, Kuala Lumpur, has been invited to share his knowledge and experience on the tax career.
According to the press release, Ling was born in Sibu and furthered his accountancy studies in New Zealand, after completing his secondary education in SMK Methodist.
Ling, whose interest is in tax, has a combined of 16 years’ experience in Financial Services Transfer Pricing and has extensive experience in leading Global/ Regional Transfer Pricing projects for local financial institutions in Malaysia as well as involved in transfer pricing projects for various multinational financial institutions with operations in Malaysia, it said.

Meanwhile, on the pathway to becoming a Tax professional at MPI, the press release, said taxation is an excellent career with promising future.
MPI Diploma in Taxation paves one’s tax career pathway, where upon completion of the diploma, the graduates will have very good career options.
“You can join commercial and industry sectors as tax compliance officer or tax manager. One can also join tax consulting and chartered accounting firm as tax associate, tax principal or tax manager,” the press release, added.
A tax agent and part-time tax lecturer of MPI, Lau Tung Ee, shared his view on the difference between an accountant and a tax professional.
“In the past, accountants used to file tax returns for clients, however, as the pace and complexity of tax laws continues to increase, professional tax advice is essential, and tax professional role is increasingly important in the business world.
“Accountants play a very different role as compared to tax professionals. Accountants’ main responsibilities is to prepare and report financial statements in accordance with the approved accounting standards to ensure they are accurately reported to investors as well as to other stakeholders,” Lau opined.
