Firm reaches out to rural villages in Baram, Lawas

- Philip Kiew

MIRI: Samling Group recently delivered hundreds of food packs to villages located in the remote pockets across Baram and Lawas.

Each of the pack comprised sugar, canned food items, biscuits, cooking oil, instant noodles, and instant chocolate malt beverage.

“It took our volunteers one full day to pack the food items, and another whole day to deliver them to the villages, some of which are located some 300km from the main road.

“We used six pick-up trucks to deliver the food packs,” said Samling regional manager Chong Chii Ming in a statement yesterday, adding that the packs were handed over to the headman of each village.

Bina Balang, the headman of the Long Sukang, said the food donations were a relief, but he also expressed his hope for the company to provide food to more needy villagers in the future.

Chong said: “The trip to these villages has allowed us to really identify future CSR (corporate social responsibility) programmes that we can do for these communities.

“This food aid is not a oneoff event – we are constantly engaging with village headmen to determine other types of assistance that the company can bring to the villages.”

It is stated that Samling has also delivered food packs to the urban poor households in Miri.

“Many of these families are really in a desperate state. It’s heart-wrenching to see how adversely affected they are by the MCO (Movement Control Order).

“While we may not be able to reach every single person in need, we hope that we can at least bring relief to some,” added Chong.

Samling Group is a home grown company that has evolved globally, but it continues to play a major role in the development of Baram District in Miri, through a vast network of roads and employment opportunities for local communities.
