GPS backs Muhyiddin, says now’s not time for politicking

-

KUCHING: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has reached a consensus to back the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“This is not the time for politicking that will undermine the stability of the country.

“This is the time for Malaysians to consolidate and unite, and bring the country out of the pandemic crisis,” the GPS chairman told a press conference at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) headquarters here yesterday.

Also present were Deputy Chief Ministers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, and other cabinet ministers.

The press conference was called after a meeting the PBB headquarters with top coalition leaders, to discuss the political situation in the country and the Covid-19 pandemic.

GPS secretary-general Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi in a statement on Wednesday night congratulated Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein on their new appointments as Deputy Prime Minister and Senior Minister respectively, as announced by the Prime Minister’s Office earlier in the afternoon.

Nanta said GPS made the stand as a show of support for the Prime Minister following Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s statement on Thursday on the party’s decision withdrawing support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Government with immediate effect.

At the same time, Zahid also called on Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to step down from his post to allow for the appointment of a temporary prime minister who will focus on the people’s wellbeing, address the Covid-19 pandemic and ensure that the vaccination process is expedited.

Besides that, he said the PN government had misused the proclamation of emergency for political purposes rather than to help the people, pointing out the practice of double standards in enforcement.

Zahid added that Umno does not support any effort in naming Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as a candidate for prime minister, nor will it support any DAP/PH-led government.

The press conference which was streamed live in various platforms was held after a fourhour long Supreme Council meeting.
