Covid-19: 270 new cases, 1 death in S’wak

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 270 new Covid-19 cases yesterday along with one fatality, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

It said in its Covid-19 daily update that the state’s cumulative number of cases now stands at 68,869 while the death toll has risen to 432.

“Kuching recorded the highest number of cases at 74, which includes two cases of detainees at the Narcotics Addiction Rehabilita­tion Centre (Puspen) Kuching,” it said.

Also recording two-digit cases were Meradong (36), Mukah (22), Sarikei (21), Samarahan (16), Miri (14), Sibu (14), Bintulu (10), and Saratok (10).

A total of 15 districts reported single-digit cases namely Telang Usan (8), Subis (7), Sri Aman (6), Bukit Mabong (5), Kanowit (5), Bau (4), Julau (4), Kapit (4), Selangau (3), Marudi (2) and one case each in Betong, Lundu, Pakan, Tatau and Tebedu.

The committee said the new cases yesterday consisted of 169 cases which were detected from screenings of individual­s with contact to positive cases; 49 from screenings of individual­s from existing active clusters; 30 from other screenings at health facilities; and 18 from screenings of symptomati­c individual­s at health facilities.

“There were also four Import A cases involving non-citizen individual­s who had returned from Indonesia,” it added.

On the sole fatality of the day, SDMC said it involved a 71-yearold man from Bintulu.

“The victim, who tested positive on June 21, died at Bintulu Hospital. He had a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic obstructiv­e pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart problem,” it said.

Meanwhile, the number of recovered patients yesterday almost doubled that of new infection cases with 526 allowed to be discharged from hospitals and quarantine and low-risk patients treatment centres (PKRC) across the state.

“The total number of recoveries in the state has now increased to 58,931 or 85.57 per cent out of the overall cases,” said the committee.
