Contractor arrested over clash with cop at roadblock

MUKAH: A contractor was arrested after allegedly obstructin­g a policeman from dischargin­g his duties and causing injury to the latter at a roadblock in Kampung Jebungan here yesterday.

Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said the 53-year-old man was arrested around 9.15am when he returned to the roadblock.

“The suspect first showed up at the roadblock at Simpang Jalan Jebungan around 7.15am where he angrily confronted the policeman on duty.

“He accused the policeman of having issued a summons against his lorry, but this was denied by the policeman, and the suspect then left the area,” he told Utusan Borneo when contacted.

Muhamad Rizal said the suspect returned to the roadblock around 9.15am and again confronted the same policeman.

“This time, he roughly grabbed hold of the policeman’s arm, and this was witnessed by another policeman, a Rela member and an Armed Forces personnel on duty at the roadblock.”

The policeman in question later sought treatment at Mukah Hospital.

According to Muhamad Rizal, the suspect is a contractor who provides transporta­tion services for oil palm fruits, and has five lorries. The suspect acted in such a manner as he believed that one of his lorries had been issued with a summons by police while transporti­ng the goods, he added.

The case is being investigat­ed under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructin­g a civil servant from dischargin­g his duties, and Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntaril­y causing hurt.
