Sunway turning today’s scholars into tomorrow’s nation builders

-

KUCHING: Sunway Education Group, through the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and its scholarships, hopes to empower youths for a better future for Malaysia through a four-part weekly series on uplifting stories from their very own Sunway University talents and how they are contributing to the nation in their own inspiring ways.

There is a saying that ‘education is priceless’ but for many, education is an expensive commodity that they cannot afford, and Sunway’s visionary founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah strives to bridge that gap.

Cheah’s motto has always been ‘I aspire to inspire before I expire’, and no other industry motivates him to do so more than education.

Growing up in a small town called Pusing, he saw the necessity of having an education through the eyes of the poor.

Since then, he has made it a personal value, as well as a value throughout Sunway, to provide quality education to deserving students.

“In 2010, the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF) was launched with a commitment to contribute towards nation-building and create a better, sustainable future for all Malaysians.

“Over the last decade, the Foundation had set about this mission by giving back to society and making quality education affordable and accessible – in perpetuity,” said Cheah.

Sunway College Kuching is part of the Sunway Education Group and are fully owned and governed by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.

Launched in 2010, the Foundation is Malaysia’s largest education focused social enterprise. Through the unique not-for-profit structure of the Foundation, operating surpluses are ploughed back into the institutions or disbursed as scholarships, research grants, and expansion of faculty and facilities to ensure sustainable and quality education.

In 2018 alone, JCF disbursed RM72 million worth of scholarships to more than 3,000 students, and to date, the Foundation has awarded a total of RM538 million to thousands of deserving students.

Since its establishment in 2007, Sunway College Kuching has awarded more than RM1 million worth of scholarships and financial aid to deserving students ranging from entrance, financial hardship, sports, continuing, scholastic or top scorers, prize winners, siblings or alumni, and community bursaries.

These scholarships benefitted both the unfortunate and some of the brightest students who were trendsetters and groundbreakers during their time at college, and have now gone on to play a part in government agencies, carrying the torch in nation building.

This year, Sunway College Kuching has awarded scholastic award to eight students who performed exceptionally well in their Diploma studies.

The Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Award is awarded to students who have achieved outstanding results in their individual academic programme at the end of their course in Sunway College.

For intakes in 2021, Sunway College Kuching has allocated The Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship and bursaries in the sum of RM288,888 to both ACCA Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) and Diploma programmes as rewards excellence by supporting deserving students who excel in their SPM/O-Level/ UEC examinations.

Heading towards living in the new norm, changes are taking place across all industries. The education sector has risen to the occasion stronger than many by embracing the virtual world and making use of technology to reach out to students everywhere.

Pioneering this evolution has been the award-winning Sunway Education Group. When it comes to education, there has never been a better time or a greater need to focus on one’s studies, or to upgrade existing skills and qualifications.
