MIRI: A single mother here, Tang Shiau Yen expressed gratitude and appreciation to members of the public for their donation towards her son’s medical treatment in the Philippines which has saved his life.

“On July 17, his tube was removed and he is now able to breathe on his own. In the last couple of days, I managed to talk to him and his breathing seems to be slowly getting back to normal. He is able to start physiotherapy to exercise his muscles after being bedridden for a month,” shared Tang.

Her eldest son, 34-year-old Billy Chai who is an architect has been working for a construction company in the Philippines since July 1, 2019. After getting his first dose of Covid-19 vaccine on June 13 this year he developed high fever.

On June 16, he was admitted to a private hospital in Manila for treatment and warded in intensive care unit since June 21.

His medical bill which amounted to about RM300,000 was partially paid by the company while the balance has to be paid by him.

Tang tried to refinance her house to raise the money but was rejected due to her age. She then sought help to raise the money to save her son’s life.

“I owe it to Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting for holding press conference appealing for donation and to each person who has donated as well as those who personally offer words of comfort.

“After the appeal, support in the form of monetary donation and words of encouragement had poured in, giving me the strength to pull through the toughest moments,” said Tang in a press conference yesterday.

Chai is currently not fit to travel yet and will stay at the hospital until doctors give him the green light.

Ting who is Piasau assemblyman said he will liaise with the Malaysian Embassy in the Philippines when Chai is able to fly home.
