SIBU: The National Association of Malaysian Life Insurance and Family Takaful Advisors (Namlifa) Sibu branch has extended its food bank project to needy families during the current Covid-19 pandemic until December this year.

Its spokesperson Catherine Huang said the number of monthly food packs shall also be increased to 180 from October until December.

A total of 244 packs have been given out to needy families since the project started in August.

“Most of the needy families are selected from areas in Jalan Foochow, Jalan Hua Kiew, Jalan Tiong Hua, Jalan Bukit Assek, Jalan Tong Sang Road and Tanjung Kunyit,” Huang revealed.

On Monday, Namlifa distributed another 30 food packs to parents of students from SJKC Dung Sang living near Jalan Diong Kik area.

For the month of October, the distribution of the food packs would also include new areas like Bahagia Jaya, Sungei Teku and Sungei Sadit.

Initially, Namlifa only planned to give out 120 packs of food per month when the project started.

“However, as time went by, we discovered there were more families in need of help due to their suffering brought by the Covid-19 pandemic and hence, we not only decided to increase the number of food packs to be given out but also extended the project to the end of the year,” Huang added.

She also expressed gratitude to those who donated in cash and kind to ensure that the project could be carried out smoothly.
