BINTULU: A family infected with Covid-19 can easily transmit the virus to other households in a longhouse se ing, Kakus assemblyman Datuk John Sikie Tayai warned.

He said this was due to the longhouse culture where the people live in big families and close to each other.

“I would like to remind all of us of the risk of infection so that we will always be vigilant.

“Many cases are now reported in longhouses, if one is infected it will easily spread to other residents in the longhouse,” said Sikie during a working visit to his constituency on Monday.

Thus, he reminded the people to avoid mass gatherings that could lead to their inability to comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

He said the government had advised the people to avoid mass gathering and not to hold celebrations.

“If there is a funeral event, it must be carried out according to the SOPs set by the government. Previously when there was a death, all relatives would come to give their last respects, but now not anymore due to Covid19,” he said.

He also reminded the longhouse chiefs to play their roles effectively so that the SOPs would be adhered to by their residents.

“You (longhouse chiefs) are responsible to ensure the safety and health of your people in the longhouse and the government entrusted you to protect your community,” he said.
